Organization in a home office is key to running your business and home smoothly. In order to keep your office organized you have to have the proper storage.

Must haves: Desk, file cabinet, shelves.

Most home offices already have these items; however it never hurts to add in extra shelving or use items designed to help organize these spaces.

Desk additions:

Under desk CPU holder

This is the best place for your desktop computer if you don’t work on a laptop. Desktop computers often have more hard drive space than the laptop so they are common in the home office. Placing the unit under the desk frees up space on the desktop.

These units come in all shapes and sizes so it is easy to find one that is the right fit for your desk. These unit help to organize space by keeping your writing utensils, paper clips, post its, rulers, scissors, staplers and anything else you may need in one convent place.

These trays are necessary to hold file folders, mail and memos to keep you up to speed with what you need to get done that day.

Most desks have at least one drawer, and if your desk does then having one of these will help to keep you organized. The organizer will keep all your accessories separated and within reach with minimal searching time.

Shelve additions:

Magazine/File trays

These are perfect for organizing your files, books and magazines for easy storage and access. Simply stick on a label and you will always know where to find what you are looking for.

Boxes/storage bins

These are great for shelves, especially when you are limited on space. Use these to hold extra boxes of staples and paperclips, markers, highlighters, pens and post its. These storage bins are perfect for other drawer items as well.

File additions:

Color coded tabs

Ok, so these are more for organization than anything else, but when you keep your files organized you will also keep space available for those files. Always unfold all papers before placing them in the files as well. This will help create space.

Electronic files

Go green, save on paper. If you can start keeping as many of your files as possible online and/or on your desktop. This can save more space than you ever imagined.

Lock box

Put your lock box with receipts and petty cash in your file cabinet. Most file cabinets lock as well and this can give you the added bonus of feeling as if your valuable are a bit safer.

Many file cabinets today are stackable. We continually find ourselves in need of more file space. Using stackable cabinets will allow space saving without moving your office around to accommodate a new file cabinet. You may also consider buying that second one ahead of time. Not only will the space be available when you need it, but until then it is a great place to hold extra accessories as well as books, manuals and magazines.

Other additions:

Floating shelves

If you have the wall space then consider floating shelves. You will need book ends if actually placing books on them, but they can be a great place for baskets of supplies and boxes of papers or electronic cords. Floating shelves are up and out of the way, an added bonus is that you can place them wherever there is wall space.

Wall mounting

Many monitor screens and computer speakers can be wall mounted nowadays. By wall mounting these things you will free up valuable desk space.

Moveable storage cabinets

Movable storage cabinets. These storage cabinets are a great place to put all your extra supplies. Movable units are usually on wheels and can be moved around the room with ease and without having to remove all their contents first. They come in all shapes and sizes so you are bound to find what you need for the space you have.
